If you love capturing the magic of winter, but don’t love that all the detail of the beautiful snow is nowhere to be found, then watch this quick video where I demonstrate one method to recover the details in blown out backgrounds. Here I use Lightroom to create multiple exposures via a virtual copy, then open those copies in Photoshop as layers in the same document. Just a little painting on a layer mask and voila, you have detail back in all areas of the photos. This technique will work great for any kind of blown background such as beach or open sky shots. The adjustment brush and gradient tool in Lightroom are excellent for bringing back spot exposure as well, but I really like the accuracy of using a layer mask in Photoshop to paint very specifically where I want.
