mentoring | photo exchange | faq ::: sheridan, wy child photographers

It’s been over a week since I posted! Whew! Did you miss me? I must admit, the break from the computer was quite refreshing. We headed out of town for the week of Thanksgiving to spend it with my brother. Time went way too quickly and as usual, there’s never enough time to do everything I have planned. We are headed back out of town this weekend to celebrate our 11th wedding anniversary… kid FREE! There is definitely something to be said for traveling without the kidlets. The sheer amount of *stuff* you have to pack with children in tow is mind blowing. The camera saw very little action this past week and we came away from the holiday with a mere 50-some uninspiring images and zero images from the Broncos game. (next time I will definitely take my camera). We ha

d sweet club level seats, which made the whole experience extraordinarily more exciting; not to mention the Broncos won. While there, my awesome client that traveled here this past summer for a family session was kind enough to take me out scouting in the downtown areas and alleyways for my upcoming week of sessions I have planned in the Fort Collins area. There was no lack of interesting nooks and crannies, funky walls, doors and COLORS to photograph. Looking forward to shooting there this coming summer. If you are from the Northern Colorado area and are interested in a shoot around May, contact me soon to get on the books!

Photo Exchange Update:

On the photo exchange front, look for a post this week sometime with two different photographers. If you are indeed interested in participating, you need to get your photo boards into me ASAP so I can get you connected and networking with other photographers. It’s a really fun experience.

Mentoring Update:

Requests continue to stream in for more information on the post processing mentoring. If you’ve contacted me either through the blog comments or by email, your name has been added to the roster. But, here’s the deal… I am very interested in putting together some sort of learning program, however, to be completely transparent with you, I do have some reservations. For one, what I do and what I know about editing didn’t happen overnight. It’s taken me years of  learning, reading, researching and experimenting to get to where I am and it continues to be an ongoing process and evolution. With that said, there is no one-stop fix, click an action and get the results you see in my images. There are hundreds of photographers out there that do simply that…. click an action and call it good. My philosophy is that actions are wonderful tools in one’s editing arsenal of tricks and I certainly have a few that I love. However, they should be used sparingly and thoughtfully and

*generally always* tweaked. There’s nothing that makes me cringe more than seeing an image and being able to say, “yeah, that’s such and such action from so-and-so’s action pack.” My editing process is more organic in nature and deals with layers, blending modes, filters, masks, etc. Because skill levels will range from newbie to advanced, I have to put some serious though into how to go about structuring the mentoring. One suggestion has been to do a forum where assignments are given and people can bounce ideas off of one another. Another thought is to do videos of me editing an image, while providing the raw image for you to follow along with. Any thoughts or ideas about the best way to go about this would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to put them in the comments or email me directly.

In addition, because of the time commitment that this will require of me, the mentoring will not be free. I thought that would go without saying, but apparently there were some questions about that. Price is yet to be determined and announced.

F A Q:

Also swimming around in my mind has been the idea of doing a FAQ here on the blog. You would be able to ask me photography related questions and hope I have the answer!  ;-). Let me know if the comments if this is something you’d like to see posted.

And FINALLY… the photos. Here are my darling, sweet, cuddly children. I say that with the tiniest ounce of sarcasm. It’s been said a million times before and it is so true… photographing one’s prodigy is a substantial undertaking, completely unpredictable and always full of sugary bribes. Hence, tonight is ice cream and last night was suckers and chocolate pudding. These kids really know how to negotiate! There were many, many more images I wanted to post, but thought 14 was already a bit indulgent. Cheers!!

Gorgeous images.

FAQ’s, definitely!!!

Online learning group, yes. I do have a lot of knowledge of photoshop and am comfortable with it, but am just starting out as far as photography is concerned. Don’t know if that helps you decide where to start! BUT JUST DO WHAT YOU CAN YOU TALENTED LADY, its easy to try to do too much!!!
THANKS

Beautiful photography! You have a very nice way with words, your image style is gorgeous :)

Michelle, I would be excited to join your learning program if you decide to do it! I have spent years trying to discover my own processing and though I’ve become much more comfortable, still find myself wanting to learn more and get more creative!

Michelle, your kiddos are beautiful and I just adore these pictures! You’re amazing!

Michelle, your kids are gorgeous!! Great images and processing as usual!

Oh my goodness…. your kids are so darling and these pictures are BEAUTIFUL!!!

the cutest EVER!!

Girl…Lets just say I could spend HOURS on your blog!!! Everything you do is AMAZING!!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent and your kind heart :) ~V

these are amazing!! just beyond words beautiful!
i’m SO excited for you to be in ft. collins!!

1. BEAUTIFULLY composed shots. ALMOST as beautiful as the children in them. ;)

2. The mentor: NOT free of course. :) That’s cute. I think you need to make sure you don’t get overwhelmed. Momma first. Photographer second. Mentor last. Maybe it would serve you well to take on ONE focus group at a time. Example, beginners or advanced. I have spent several years and HOURS in photo editing and lighting and etc and would have VERY different needs than a budding photographer. Just a thought so you aren’t spread too thin.

3. FAQ’s….love it….just make sure it doesn’t turn into a freebie secret share. :)

I can’t get over how cool the pic of Juliet through the hole in the wood is! LOVE the expression on her face too!

Happy anniversary and beautiful little faces :)

1. Happy Anniversary! 2.Your children are adorable! 3. Love your editing! :)

That 1st image is insane! I love your family images too. Very nice :)

Totally agree re: actions and predictability! :) That is why I heart your work – it’s original and it’s YOURS. I can’t look at it and think, “Oh, that’s such-and-such actions.” :) And yay for mentor sessions, I can’t wait! And FAQs too! You are too generous. Love the shots as well… as always. :) xoxo

Oh my gosh, your kids are sooo adorable!! I absolutely love the colors and the locations are killer! How awesome that a client showed you around, and that you have a full week of sessions there! Any chance you’ll be coming to Ohio in the future?! lol!

Gorgeous as always Michelle!

Wow- I can’t even pick a favorite. You are AMAZING! I don’t know how you have the time to edit each picture so perfectly. I really need to start doing that. Maybe in January when life slows down a bit. Keep up the great work!

Michelle!! I have to say that you are truly one of my favorite photographers. I just adore
your work. Your clients are so lucky to have you capture their lives!! Beautiful!!

i love the last photo, the texture is perfect! I’ve been crazy busy but plan on getting my storyboard to you for the photo exchange!

These are just amazing, and so sweet. More jewels for your treasure chest of memories!!

Great to have you back! These are just FABULOUS! I love your ideas about the FAQ and also the forum with assignments…You ROCK!

*picking up jaw from floor* your photos are as insirational as they are breathtaking! Your children are so sweet and photogenic as well! An FAQ would be lovely; I do agree with you vehemently on the “can’t teach this in one day”. Photography, as in any other art form, is subjective. Even as green as I am I do know that style develops over time. Being a self taught CS4 user, it has taken years to learn and I still have a long way to go. Pro’s like you sharing your skills are what encourage us newbies to set the bar higher for ourselves, even it we aren’t in business. I am so glad I found your site and look forward to sharpening my own skills through the many professionals willing to share their knowledge. I do love my actions and presets, but find myself tweaking (as you said), always endeavouring to take my SOOC shots from ‘very nice’ to ‘OMG OMG OMG!’.

Gorgeous set. I love the bright colors, choice of backgrounds, and kids are beautiful.I was going to mention my favorites but I really can’t decide, I love them all. Great job Michelle.

That last one melts my heart, such a sweet capture! These are all beautiful. The colors are amazing!

Gorgeous kiddos!!!! I would love to see some FAQ’s on here and the ideas of you editing an image on video would give an ameteur like me some insight to your processing!

Thank GOODNESS! Ohh, you are right on track, Michelle! These images are delicious, and there’s a bit more of a spark to these than anything before too! That shot with Juliet and all the red! Wow! And for the record, I’d love to see a FAQ on here!

Julie

Absolutely adorable pictures of both kids!!

Absolutely adorable! Love that little outfit Juliet is wearing, too!

No questions asked that last pictures HAS to be made HUGE HUGE HUGE!!! That is a tresure!! Your use of color and light here once again is just supreme! Great creativiy and compositions as well!!! I have been eagerly waiting to see some more of your brilliant work! I am happy to say that I got my photography fix!

Wow Michelle! Great pictures. Love the color. Isn’t bribery a wonderful thing?! :) Oh what we will do for a picture!

Marika

Geeze! Where to start! It might be a challenge to get your kids ready for a shoot, but they look amazing! Nice work!!!
